Tai Shan, in Shandong Province, bears both historical importance and breathtaking natural beauty. Traces of human presence at Mt. Tai date back to the Paleolithic period. In ancient China, Mt. Tai played an important role in the development of Buddhism and Taoism. Tai in Chinese means peace. Tai was the first climb for an emperor ascending to the throne to pray to Heaven and Earth or their ancestors for peace for the country. It was said that 72 emperors of different dynasties made pilgrimages to this mountain.
