 Suzhou, China

Suzhou
is a beautiful city on the lower stretch of the Yangtze River and on the shores of Tai Lake (Taihu) in Jiangsu Province, in eastern China. About an hour drive from Shanghai, it’s often called by the tourists as “the Venice of the East” or “the Silk Capital of China”. There are many unique water towns around the city like Tongli, Mudu, etc. Their picturesque canals with ancient bridges, traditional Chinese architecture and daily on-water-by-water lifestyle of the locals, Suzhou and its nearby water towns are charming places to visit in China.

Dating back to more than 2,500 years, Suzhou is one of China's oldest cities. The city is renowned for its beautiful stone bridges, pagodas, and harmoniously designed gardens which offer a different view at every turn. Classical gardens in Suzhou including the Humble Administrator's Garden, the Lingering Garden, the Garden of Master of Nets, etc, were added to the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1997 and 2000. Suzhou is an important center for China's silk industry since the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD), and continues to hold that prominent position today. It is part of the Golden Triangle region together with Shanghai and Hangzhou. One of China’s most prosperous cities, the GDP per capita is ranked top 10 among 600+ Chinese cities.
