Shanghai, another cosmopolitan city of the world, is situated on the bank of the Yangtze River Delta in East China. It’s the largest city of China and the seventh largest in the world. Widely regarded as the central hub of China's modern economy, the city serves as one of the nation's most important cultural, commercial, financial, industrial and communications centers. Like Beijing, Shanghai is a municipality of China that has province-level status.

The Chinese word “Shanghai” means “going to the sea”. Shanghai is in fact one of the world's busiest ports and by 2005 it has become the largest cargo ports in the world. In the past, Shanghai was already an international city filled with foreign missionaries, diplomats and adventure-seekers. Many early western movies about China depicted Shanghai as that exotic and mystic oriental city.
Rapid expansion of the modern city and its economy has been seen since 1990s with government’s favorable policy to the city. Nowadays it has become more and more an international attraction with an influx of foreign investments, enterprises and tourists. Shanghai is chosen to host World Expo 2010. Shanghai's skyscrapers and modern lifestyle are often quoted as representing China's recent economic development.
